Fallingwater House: the PENNSYLVANIA house with a story

Fallingwater House, designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a masterpiece of modern architecture that has captured the hearts of art lovers and architects alike.

As a self-professed real estate junkie, I have loved learning about architectural styles over the years and Frank Lloyd Wright has certainly made his mark world-wide. While contemporary architecture is not my cup-of-tea, I do marvel at the balance and angles built into these homes.

Located in the heart of Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands, it was built between 1936 and 1939 and is considered one of Wright's greatest works. Fallingwater House's story begins when Edgar Kaufmann Sr., a department store owner from Pittsburgh, commissioned Wright to design a weekend home for his family. Wright, who was already well-known for his innovative architecture, took the challenge and spent several months surveying the property to find the perfect location for the house. After much consideration, he found a spot over a waterfall in the woods and decided that the house would be built right on top of it.

Wright's design of Fallingwater House incorporates nature into his innovation. The house is made up of several levels that seem to hang off the edge of the waterfall and are held up by reinforced concrete columns. The organic form of the house follows the natural lines of the surrounding trees and rocks, which gives the impression that Fallingwater House is an effortless part of the landscape. One of the most impressive features of the house is the use of cantilevers, which Wright used to extend the patio out over the waterfall. Visitors can experience the sound of water flowing directly beneath them while they enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding forest.

The interior of the house is also a marvel of innovation. Wright's design is characterized by open spaces, large windows, and natural materials such as stone, wood, and glass. The open floor plan allows for easy circulation through the house, and the large windows seamlessly connect the interior with the surrounding nature. Wright's attention to detail can be seen in every aspect of the house, from the built-in furniture to the carefully crafted light fixtures.

The beauty and innovation of Fallingwater House have made it a beloved landmark of American architecture and a symbol of 20th-century modernism. In fact, it has been designated a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public for tours. Visitors can learn about Wright's design philosophy and his use of technology and materials, as well as the history of the Kaufmann family and their relationship with Wright. In summary, Fallingwater House is a masterpiece of architectural design that continues to inspire artists, architects, and visitors to this day. Its unique location, innovative use of materials and technology, and connection to nature make it one of the most iconic houses in the world.

If you are ever in Pennsylvania, be sure to visit Fallingwater House and experience the visionary brilliance of Frank Lloyd Wright - it is on my bucket list for sure!
